Abstract

The main focus of this paper is to understand the relevance of the tertiary institutions in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Nigeria with the view of suggesting how they can be better positioned to assist the government in achieving the goals. The paper argues that while the Nigerian version of MDGs Documents is a welcome development, however it execution has its own challenges which require augmenting human capital and raising its quality. Therefore, the effective operation of the National Innovation System is an important factor for success in achieving MDGs, as it is the experience of some countries in the world. Therefore, the paper concludes that universities require restructuring so as to take responsibility for an active role in the more complex field of economic development, covering a portfolio of applied and basic research, consulting and community services, specialised training, distance learning and tech-based venture formation.
